Generics, generic medicines |
Medicines are the result of Research & Development. In order to be able to bear the fruits of these R&D efforts, the R&D-based pharmaceutical companies apply for a patent to protect the medicines that they have researched and developed. This patent offers them the right to sell the patented medicine exclusively during a certain period of time. When the patent has expired, other companies can bring the original product – in their proper versions – to the market. These products are then called generic medicines. In most countries, the government has stipulated that generic medicines should be considerable lower-priced than their original counterparts. In this way, the government intends to keep better control of its healthcare expenditure (i.e. for reimbursement of medicines). |
